Summary the ship of Dreams by: John Hughes

The Ship of Dreams is a family play that takes scene in Daley home and shop, in the dockland of Cardiff, Wales. The Ship of Dreams describing a small family life in a small town in Cardiff, running a small shop for their living. The family consists of the head of family Mr. Daley and his wife Mrs. Daley. They have a son Tom Daley, his hobby is reading books and novel about travelling. Their parent especially his father do hate his hobby. His father doesn’t want to see his son just wasting his time in reading the novels. His father doesn’t want if Tom wants be the traveler. Although his father hates his hobby, tom never quit from his current hobby. He still loves to ask from his friend to send him the gift from their journey. His mother always gives tom advice to not doing his hobby near his father.

 Actually his father wants Tom to be the next generation in running the family business, but tom hasn’t interested in trade. In Tom’s minds it’s all about sea, sea, and sea all the time. And of course that make his father really angry to see the ambition of his son. His father promises that he will half to kill him to train him in business. His mother scares if one day tom will leave his family just to complete his ambition, but his father said that tom will have no gumption to leave the family and think if that just be a son dream. His father believe that tom will never farther that the public library. Tom’s friends Danny always tell the story of his journey and Tom enjoys hearing it. Danny also mock tom if he has to spend all of his life time stuck on the small shop.

One day such the normal day, Tom keeping the shop and serve the customer. The last buyer is a old sailor that make conversation about his experience in traveling. And certainly that make Tom comfort to talk about travel. The old sailor gives him advice that he will leave all of his current life some day when he is already to travel. And while the old sailor pay for his tools his money isn’t enough and the old sailor give a carving for arrest of the money for paying, and Tom happy with the carving. When his father enter the shop and check the till, he found there is ten shilling missing money. And he interrogates Tom and asks where the money is. Tom explained that the money is not lost, but the old sailor is cannot afford the bill, so the old sailor give me this gift to pay it. And tom promises he wills change the money by his own money. His fathers take the gift that given by the old sailor and tell Tom if that is just rubbish, and not cost ten shilling. Tom and his father debate and in serious emotion till Tom said he will pay back all of the money that have been given to him and he leave the shop to get his dream ambition.
