Major, supporting and minor characters
Major characters Jabez stone, Daniel Webster, Mr. Scratch.
We considered them as the main characters because either internal or external problem emerged in this drama, involved them. They are significant characters in this play, their roles are really important.
Supporting Characters
Marry stone and the fiddler
Even though they almost appeared in the drama, but they did not involved directly in the problem/conflicts.
Minor characters
Justice hathrone, the clerk, Walter Butler, Simon Girty, teach, king Philip, dale, marton (the juries), men and women of cross corners-New Hampshire.
They did not involve early in the play but in the middle of the play they take part in the important role of they play.
Rounded characters and flat characters
Round characters
Ø Jabez Stone
As stated above that they all had more than three characters traits, so that we conclude that they are rounded characters. As we know that character in fiction had some traits, absolutely their character will be rounded as human like. Their characters not stereotype as good person or bad person only.
Flat characters
Ø Mr. scratch, the fiddler justice hathrone, the clerk, walter butler, Simon Girty, teach, king Philip, Dale, Morton(the juries), men and women of cross corners-New Hampshire. Their personalities are ordinary not make us confused.
Protagonist and antagonist
Protagonist
Ø Daniel Webster & Jabez stone
In this drama, they are on the right/good side.
Antagonist
Mr. Scratch
He was in the left side (enemy) that forced working against Jabez.
There were many problems that appeared in this drama are:
# Jabez Stone’s problem. It was faced when he was the poor unlucky farmer who has a lot ambition such as having a big white city house and city clothes but he was a lazy person who wanted everything done instantly. Ten years ago, he sold his soul for about two cents to the devil and signed the paper. After ten years, flow smoothly until the agreement day. The devil would come to demand it.
# The problem that faced by the guest when they wondered how Jabez got his wealth and scared when Mr. Scratch Came.
# The problem that faced marry is when she was afraid her happiness of her wedding would be gone.
Conflicts
Jabez stone never try to get his successful life by doing better working. He only wanted to get instantly, such as sold his soul to devil. Jabez stone obviously shocked and scared when “the devil” demanded to fulfill the bargain (agreement) of jabez stone because he sold his soul to the devil. Jabez stone has problem with his neighbors. His neighbors suspected him how he got his wealth fast. Daniel Webster was angry when all of his motions were denied by the judge.
Climax
The movement from the initial statement of conflict to the climax refers to as complication. In “The devil and Daniel Webster” play was consist primarily when the scratch (Who is, we are told as the devil) play song with a fiddle for Mr. and Mrs. Stones, also included when Webster chase the devil because he has made everyone in that wedding party frighten, until the fiddler man tampering with the devil’s collecting box that already made him mad.
Surprise
When the fiddler open scratch’s box, there are the sound of the lost soul (the frightening sound) that we never think it before. The author also make us surprise, when the jury decides that jabez not guilty and scratch try to advocate himself, then there are lights come in the court, judge and the jury are gone.
Resolution
This drama showed the resolution by the action giving by Mr. Webster’s action to solve Mr. Stone problem toward the devil and by that action Mr. Webster win the case because he made the jury decided that Mr. Stones was not guilty and stated to be free.
Ending
The ending of this play was happy ending: close plot. It first shows the happiness of new couple married Mr. Jabez and Mrs. Marry Stones. Jabez was free from Mr. Scratch.
